A soft call drew Star’s attention to the fence lining the property. She saw a raven watching her intently.    She remembered that in the long ago time the Cherokee had seen the raven as messenger from The Great Father to the Medicine Men.  As a member of the Paint Clan, she had inherited some of the gifts to see and understand.

“Do you have a message for me, Little Brother?”

The raven called again, cocked his head and looked down. There on the ground, half hidden in the grass, was a silver ring, proof the missing girl had been here.

I present for your viewing pleasure, the art of Donald Vann – one of the best Cherokee Artists of the modern era.  In the 7th row (or 3rd from the bottom) of the linked page is a beautiful piece title “Shaman’s Council”  If I remember the story correctly, the medicine men were sending out the raven to ask Great Father about the strange pale skinned men who had come into the land.   On this page, in the last row, you can see sequel “Return of the Raven” and one of the prints that I am proud to own.
