She knew the legends; she’d grown up hearing them. But wishes were not granted by gods you didn’t believe in.

She placed a single gold crane on the mirror like surface of the pond and watched it slowly drift away, the reflection and the paper merging to become one image. Straightening up she glanced at a faded photo of a newlywed couple.

“Happy Anniversary”, she whispered.

She didn’t believe in the legends and folding a thousand cranes really was beyond her skills. Besides, it wasn’t like her wish for one more year could ever be granted.
